The combined VO2 and lactate triathlon package consists of VO2 max and lactate testing for both cycling and running. The session will last approximately 3 hours in total and you are required to bring your own bicycle.
What is the testing protocol?
Step 1: Following an initial warm up period on the Computrainer or treadmill we will compete a lactate profiling test which involves cycling or running for 4 minutes at progressively increasing intensities. At the end of each 4 minute period we will take a finger prick blood sample to measure lactate and plot the points until we see a significant increase in lactate levels, commonly termed the 'lactate turnpoint'. One we are sure that you have reached lactate turnpoint, the test will end, you will not be required to cycle or run at your maximal intensity.
Step 2: To calculate VO2 max you are required to wear a gas collection mask and whilst riding or running the intensity is gradually increased until you cannot sustain the required workload and you are forced to stop the test. Most triathletes are forced to abandon following 6-8 minutes of exercise. During this maximal phase of the test we will collect HR data and perform gas analysis to calculate economy, anaerobic threshold and VO2 maximum scores for both running and cycling. The test results are specific to each discipline and can vary significantly.
Why should I book a combined VO2 and lactate test?
Both VO2 Max and lactate turnpoint are valuable and independent physiological markers for your current state of fitness, in addition the gas analysis measurements will allow you to determine the point at which your body is using fat as the primary energy source as opposed to carbohydrates and your current economy ratings. The threshold calculations are crucial for development of accurate heart rate zones and training parameters. Utilizing the information from the VO2 max and lactate tests we can identify the most appropriate training intensity and type of training for you specifically. If you would like to improve your ability to deal with lactate or to work in a zone that will primarily use fat as an energy source, this test can provide the accurate parameters needed.
From the tests you will identify (for both disciplines):
VO2 max (ml/kg/min)
Anaerobic threshold (measured by gaseous exchange)
Lactate threshold and lactate turnpoint
Energy usage for any given heart rate
Fuel mixture for any given heart rate
Oxygen consumption at a range of exercise intensities Calculation of training zones
Following the test you will receive structured feedback and training suggestions which can be integrated into you regular programme.
How much does it cost?
The cost for cycle and run testing to include both lactate and VO2 analysis is £175, the session will last approximately 3 hours.
